DRAGONFLY WORKSHOP: 27 MARCH 2009
Twenty-three people attended the Trust’s Dragonfly Workshop, held at Farnborough Community Centre on Friday, 27 March. The Workshop was led by Ken Crick who has been actively recording and photographing dragonflies in the Blackwater Valley (and elsewhere) for many years.
Ken covered the identification of the 23 species of dragonflies and damselflies found within the Blackwater Valley and illustrated his talk with images of each species, showing them in their natural environment. He went on to explain, in some detail, the key features of dragonfly and damselfly larvae and exuvia which, in some cases, required examination under a microscope to establish the correct species. Ken explained that the examination of exuvia were necessary to establish whether or a not a species had achieved a complete life-cycle in the pond or watercourse. The workshop concluded with a demonstration of the dissection of an exuvia under a microscope.
If you want to find out more about the dragonflies and damselflies that can be found in the Valley (including the Four-Spotted Chaser pictured below), a booklet, Blackwater Valley
