ARE YOU A CHARMER?

You could be a local champion!

BVCT is organising a unique sporting event at the start of October – the South of England heat of the UK Worm Charming Championships. On Saturday 1st October we are hoping that hundreds of people will flock towards KingsInternationalCollegein Camberley to try their hand at enticing worms out of the ground, or to watch them doing it.

If you have never tried worm-charming before – and let’s face it, most of us haven’t!  – it is tremendous fun for people of all ages, and virtually no skill is required. Providing you stick to just a few basic rules, you can use any method you like to entice them out of the ground. Worms respond to vibration, so the most popular approach is to play music or create vibrations using a garden fork. Dancing has been known to work too! Judges will be present to ensure fair play, but the main point of the day is to have fun.

Competitors will be allocated a plot of ground, and the winner will be the one with the most worms after 30 minutes. There are 60 plots available at £5 each, but entries are coming in fast.

There are other attractions besides the competition. If you want to learn all about the vital role that worms play in the balance of nature, The Earthworm Society of Britain are running a couple of workshops, and the Camberley Natural History Society are conducting earthworm identification surveys. There will also be stalls and refreshments.

So for a Saturday with a difference, get your entry in now! If you want to enter, or just need more details, go to Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership website, or ring Christine Reeves of the Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership on 01252 331353.

BVCT has a special connection to worm-charming. The father of Trust Secretary Steve Bailey first introduced the practice to the UK.
