Tuesday 16 November 2010Trust AGM

This event took place at Sandhurst Community Hall.  The main feature of the evening was the Report of the Trustees on the past years activities. Wednesday 14 July 2010 – An Evening Nightjar Walk. Meet at Pirbright village green car park SU946561 at 8pm. Bring torch for walk after dark. May be muddy after rain, some walking on rough tracks necessary.  Regrettably this event had to be cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

Saturday 26 June 2010 – Pond Dipping For The Family 2.00pm in the Watchmoor Reserve car park. Map ref SU 863587 Take a break from your shopping trip to Sainsbury’s and discover what life there is in the ponds at Watchmoor Reserve, off the Blackwater Valley , just behind the Sainsbury’s petrol station. During National Insect Week the whole family is invited to join in a pond dipping event. Have you always wanted to pond dip and never got around to it? Adults will get an equal opportunity to dip and you can even leave the kids at home while you enjoy the delights of the underwater world. Accompanied children welcome but not essential.

Saturday 8 May 2010 – Walk the Path, Rowhill to Sandhurst (13 miles) Sunday 9 May 2010– Walk the Path, Sandhurst to Swallowfield (10 miles) The popular annual event to walk the Blackwater Valley Path from source to mouth. Registration will be necessary to help with the logistics. Full details will be available in March from the BVCP at Ash Lock Cottage, telephone 01252 331353, or by e-mail to blackwater.valley@hants.gov.uk.

Saturday 1 May 2010 – Surrey Heath Show, Frimley Lodge Park – Trust and Partnership volunteers and staff manned a stand at the Surrey Heath Show on the first May Bank Holiday weekend, and were rewarded with over twenty new members. Visitors to the stand were attracted by a pond life display, and while the children were able to play with the tadpoles and newts, water boatmen and larvae, their parents were ‘gently’ persuaded of the benefits of membership. Incentives to join on the day were packets of seeds, and free copies of some of the Partnership’s booklets on wildlife and walks in the Valley.

Monday 19 April 2010  – Bird Identification Workshop. This indoor evening is aimed at helping you identify some of the birds found in your gardens and the Valley in Spring. The birds will be singing outside now so come and join us to identify which ones you hear and whether they are resident or migrants from many miles away. Pictures and songs will be shown to help you identify birds when you venture along the Valley. 7.30 pm at Basingstoke Canal Centre Mytchett. Free to members, nominal charge to non members (refundable on joining). Refreshments available.

Saturday 13 March 2010 –  Small Mammal Trapping 8.00 am Led by Bernard Baverstock, we examined live catching traps to discover what small mammals are living in the undergrowth in Shepherd Meadows, the nature reserve alongside the River Blackwater at Sandhurst. The event was open to all – accompanied children welcome, dogs on leads also. Several wood mice and a bank vole were the highlights but a Yellow-necked Mouse caught in Bernard’s garden also provided fascinating entertainment. A full report is on the newspage.

Saturday 20 February 2010 – Making Nest Boxes10.00 – 12.00 at Rowhill Nature Reserve. Cranmore Lane, Aldershot.  http://sites.google.com/a/rowhills.org/www/visitorinformation  An enthusiastic group spent a couple of hours making nest boxes with Bernard Baverstock during National Nest Box Week. http://www.bto.org/nnbw/index.htm  All materials were provided and many nestboxes made and sold to raise funds for the Trust.  An enjoyable experience was had by all. Refreshments were available.

Sunday 31 January 2010  – Winter Birds – A morning walk, about 2 hours, led by Colin Wilson.  A successful walk in Aldershot Park and Tongham Pond, to see the woodland and water birds. Those attending saw many species including the difficult water rail and a very good variety of wintering duck.
